Through her legal team, the creative designer who is accused of defrauding Nigerian music star Rema has finally spoken out.
Rema recently accused Ms. Amaka Obasi, the creative director of Arden Lifestyle Company, of fraud and poor project management in a house remodeling project. Her attorneys, however, denied the accusations as unfounded and deceptive in a thorough statement issued by Valerian Vianney & Partners LP, claiming their client was misrepresented.
The law company claims that Obasi was officially hired under a Designer Services Agreement to manage Rema’s Lagos home makeover.
They claimed that the deal included major renovations like demolition, adding five bedrooms instead of four, rebuilding the pool, installing POP, roofing, flooring, tiling, and a new carport.
Her legal team kept in constant contact with the Afrobeats artist during the most recent assignment, pointing out that Obasi had unquestionably finished two prior projects for the Ikubor family. They also mentioned that she frequently sent Rema videos and pictures of her progress, and that Rema never voiced any complaints about the speed or caliber of the work.
In response to the reported delay, the firm stated that unanticipated difficulties, such as Rema’s design modifications, estate managers’ access restrictions, and inflation-driven cost hikes, were to blame. The statement underlined that despite these obstacles, Obasi never raised her professional fees, despite the fact that the project’s scope greatly increased.
Her attorneys claim that the dispute only arose when they began talking about doing more work beyond what was originally agreed upon, which they feel should have remained purely polite.
According to the statement, Ms. Obasi’s constitutional rights were violated when she was allegedly arrested by the police after Rema filed a petition.
It said:
“The allegation of fraud and obtaining money by false pretence is unfounded. The law should not be weaponised to criminalise civil disagreements or used as a tool for debt recovery.”
