After a recent publication, the Recording Academy, which hosts the prestigious Grammy Awards, has sparked a great deal of controversy on Nigerian internet.
After analyzing the development of Afrobeats and mentioning their top three Afrobeats musicians, the Recording Academy sparked a heated discussion on their official X (formerly Twitter) page.
The Recording Academy talked about the rise of Afrobeats in the mid-2010s and their top 10 songs, which include Rema’s Ozeba and 2Baba’s African Queen, in the same tweet.
Grammy names Wizkid, Burna Boy, and Rema as the top three Afrobeats musicians from 2010 to the present in the tweet.
Grammy went on to announce their top ten Afrobeats songs ever in the published article.
The list includes 2Baba’s African Queen released in the year 2004, “Do Me” by P-Square released in the year 2007, “Bumper 2 Bumper” by Wande Coal in the year 2009, “Pon Pon Pon” by Dagrin in the year 2009, “Azonto” by Fuse ODG feat. Tiffany Owusu in 2014.
Other songs include Wizkid’s “Ojuelegba” from 2014, Runtown’s “Mad Over You” from 2016, Niniola’s “Maradona” from 2017, Asake’s “Sungba” from 2022, and Rema’s “Ozeba” from 2024.
Part of their article read: “From its popularization in the mid-2010s to current global, chart-topping dominance by the likes of @wizkidayo, @burnaboy and @heisrema, the sound of Afrobeats is constantly shifting.”
