The death of well-known Tiv gospel musician Israel Terhemba Ikyereve, also known as New Jerusalem, has plunged Nigeria’s gospel music world into sadness.
The cherished music minister died at the age of 53, leaving a legacy of ministry, religion, and music that moved people beyond of Benue State. The late singer was renowned with transforming the Tiv ethnic sound into a potent evangelistic weapon. She was most known for fusing Christian songs with Swange rhythms.
During a visit to the Ikyereve family home in Makurdi to offer condolences, former Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom led homage to the dead legend.
Ortom, accompanied by Brethren Prayer Group members, talked fervently about the influence of New Jerusalem’s music and how he has a spiritual influence on many people’s lives.
Ortom stated: “His songs touched my heart as a lover of Christ. That attraction led me to build a relationship with him and his family.”
When Ortom observed a Tiv guy in Australia teaching music while the gospel of New Jerusalem played in the background, he recalled an emotional moment.
He claimed that this demonstrated how the artist has introduced Benue’s gospel sound to audiences around the world. Hon. Iorshagher Ikyereve, the late singer’s older brother, spoke on behalf of the family and thanked Ortom for supporting them both throughout Israel’s illness and after his death. He revealed in a heartwarming way that the singer’s son was given the name “Ortom” in appreciation of the former governor’s steadfast support.
On Saturday, July 5, 2025, his hometown of Sati Agirigi, Mbamo, Shitile, in Katsina-Ala LGA, Benue State, will host his funeral.
