Renowned rapper Tobechukwu Melvin Ejiofor, better known by his stage name Illbliss, has criticized several Nigerian musicians for their glaring silence on the nation’s growing poverty and insecurity.
He pointed out that for self-serving motives, certain celebrities are avoiding speaking out against the nation’s insecurity and poor administration.
Nonetheless, he praised musicians like Falz who had previously participated in demonstrations against bad leadership and utilized their music to denounce corruption.
A recent episode of The Real Shareholders podcast included Illbliss as a guest.
He said, “There are very commendable names that have come out to speak and join protests and even get arrested. Falz The Bhad Guy is one of them. He has a whole project titled, ‘Moral Instructions.’ I dare believe that it is probably the Falz’s album with the least streams or commercial success because he was hugely introspective. It just mirrored society.
“On the other flip side of things, there’s a huge percentage of the artistic industry that has basically turned their backs on what’s happening in Nigeria, for reasons best known to them. Perhaps, they know that regardless of whatever you say, the government will do whatever they wants to do. Or, they are just playing safe because the people in the government are their godfathers. They invite them to their events.”
