Afrobeats musician Qing Madi, whose real name is Chimamanda Pearl Chukwuma, has reaffirmed her assertions that the Nigerian music scene is “dark.”
The 18-year-old artist claimed that numerous predators are attempting to exploit young musicians in Nigeria by providing them with unfair contracts.
Based on her personal experience, Qing Madi said that avaricious executives are common in the music industry.
She was mentioned in a recent Lagos Meets London podcast episode.
“I’ve had a lot of contact issues,” she stated. There were numerous problems where industry experts simply said Individuals in the music business only care about themselves. They only want to take advantage of you because they are so avaricious. The [music] business is gloomy.
I entered the field by mistake because I have personal experience with that. People began to relate to my songs, so I released more, but all I wanted was to write music, make money, and attend school. However, some people have less than ideal motivations, which will impact your creative output.
“My mom tries to remind me that I’m a kid in the most insane ways by asking me to do house chores just so I know I’m still a human being and need to relax,” Madi remarked when asked how she manages to reconcile life and music. Because it doesn’t feel human at times.
Sometimes you feel like a machine, and everyone is just examining you with papers in an attempt to figure out how to profit from you. And I beg you to let me go home, please. It seems as though you don’t have enough time to be a person and a parent. It’s a complete disaster. It’s insane.
