
Mike Ejeagha, a seasoned Igbo folklore performer, died at age 95. After a protracted illness, the music superstar passed away at the 32 Garrison Hospital in Enugu at approximately 8 p.m., according to his eldest son, Emma Ejeagha, who verified his death.
The illness’s nature was not revealed, though.
Ejeagha established a distinctive niche in Nigerian music by fusing highlife beats with traditional Igbo proverbs.
He gained a great deal of respect and admiration for his efforts to the musical preservation of Igbo culture.
Recall that last year popular skit maker Chukwuebuka Emmanuel Amuzie, popularly known as Brain Jotter, helped revive global interest in Ejeagha’s music.
He introduced a viral dance challenge based on the singer’s 1983 track Gwo Gwo Gwo Ngwo, surfacing a renewed appreciation for the folklore classic. Thanks to the challenge, the four-decade-old song charted at number 95 on Spotify Nigeria, earning Mike Ejeagha a fresh wave of accolades from fans both at home and abroad.
