Nnamdi Kanu Biography, Life And Controversies

Nnamdi Okwu Kanu, popularly known as Nnamdi Kanu, son of Mr Eze Israel Okwu Kanu (JP) and Mrs Ugoeze Nnenne Kanu of Isiama Afara, Abia State, Nigeria. Nnamdi Kanu
attended Library Avenue Primary School which forms a bulk of the Government House Umuahia currently and Government College. Known to have attended the University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN), but could not finalize his studies owing to the incessant strikes by the Academic Staff Union of these Universities (ASUU).

Due to uncertainties as regarding his education in Nigeria, Mr Kanu traveled to the UK (United Kingdom), and London in particular, where he completed his tertiary education. 
Nnamdi Kanu is currently as the the Director of Radio Biafra, a London-based broadcasting station, known for its popularity among the Igbos, spreading the idea and concept of the region’s independence.

The name Biafra dates back to the 60's as the name  given to the secessionist state in the south-eastern part of the Nigerian nation from around May 1967 to January 1970, when natives of the area led by late Mr. Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu decided to break away from the Nigeria as its own federation. For about two and a half years, the bitter biafran war ranged which was known to claim the lives of an estimated 1 million citizens. The war ended but Biafra was still integrated in the Nigerian federation. The biafran region includes the Igbos, Ibibio-Efiks, Ijaws, Ogojas etc. 

He is also known as the leader of the IPOB (the Indigenous People of Biafra) known to registered in about 38 Countries of the world currently. Around October 18, 2015, reports that the leader of IPOB Nnamdi Kanu was arrested in Nigeria's Lagos State by the Nigeria’s Department of State Services (DSS). Reports have it that the troops invaded his hotel room at Golden Tulip Essential Hotel Ikeja, Lagos State and made the arrest. Reports of his arrest the Department of State Security was later released by the press. In Abuja, the news of his arrest generated mass protests as well as across different parts Nigeria.

October 19, 2015, reports had it that Mr. Nnamdi Kanu was released on  bail, after he was arraigned at the Magistrate Court, Wuse 11. News had it that the bail conditions were very stringent as a level 16 officer in the Ministry, the Certificate of Occupancy of a land within Abuja municipality was also required to be produced before the bail could be perfected. According to a statement released by Nnamdi Kanu's lawyer, the statement explains that his client met the bail conditions in full. However, the bail was never honored as this threw the IPOB into disarray. Lawyer Mr Vincent Obetta expressed unbelief, stating that for the first time, he has seen where a court grants bail and the person not released.

He further explained that under the United Nations and Africa charter, it explains that once bail is met, the victim, meeting the bail conditions should to be released. On Wednesday, December 16, 2015, Nnamdi Kanu was found not guilty  by the Magistrate Court, Wuse Zone 2, Abuja, per Shuaibu Usman, on the counts of ownership of an unlawful society and criminal conspiracy filed against him by the Federal Government of Nigeria and discharged. 
The next day December 17, 2015, Federal High Court in Abuja, granted the leaders of the IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, bail. Justice Adeniyi Ademola in his ruling explained that Mr. Kanu should be released unconditionally while the case against him continues. News on the imminent release of Nnadi Kanu sparked-off Jubilant crowd in Onitsha, Enugu and other cities of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Background and Introduction

Mr Kanu is known to be a political activist based in London, United Kingdom. He is currently a leading member of separatist organization Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), and the director in charge of London-based radio station Radio Biafra.Mr Nnamdi Kanu to some Nigerians is a leader and a hero while others know Mr kanu as someone who does'nt desire the peace of their Nation.
 
His arrest in mid 2015 by the Nigerian DSS has lead to his immediate fame across the nations, his initial arrest caused massive protest around the country although he was later released following a few months in jail.

Mr Kanu was born
to HRM Eze Israel Okwu Kanu (JP) and Mrs Ugoeze Nnenne Kanu of (Isiama Afara) Abia State, Nigeria. As stated in the beginning parts of this article, Kanu attended Library Avenue Primary School (now a major part of the Government House, Umuahia) and went to Government College for his secondary education. Known to later gain admission to the University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN), where he could not finish as a result of incessant strikes before leaving for London to complete his studies.

The early months of 2013 saw Mr Namdi  make what was known to be his first ever broadcast of Radio Biafra from Nigeria. Mr kanu later boasted that he used his laptop, internet and other de­vices to access renown London studio to broadcast to the world.
 
Nnamdi Kanu stressed that delegates at the National Conference should endeavor to negotiate for Biafra to succeed as a country of its own or face the incurable wrath of the Igbo people. He stressed that Nigeria should respect the minds and wish of its people to become a breakout nation. Mr Namdi reiterated that he's a man that respects the views of others and as such, the decision and views of his people be respected.

In an interview session with SaharaTV’s Rudolf Okonkwo, Mr.  Nnamdi Kanu tagged the national conference "time wasters" since the same people who created the problems of Nigeria are the ones seeking ways to turn things around. He encouraged the delegates representing the Igbo community , enjoining them not to return to Igboland if they fail in their bid to negotiate a secession from the Nigerian federation.

Controversies

On October 18, 2015, Mr. kanu was reportedly arrested in his Golden Tulip Essential Hotel room in Ikeja, Lagos State by Nigeria’s secret police the Department of State Services (DSS). Mr Kanu speaking to his solicitors, claimed that he was, on 14th October, 2015, arrested by the agents of the Federal Government of Nigeria, the State Security Service (SSS) in his hotel room without a just cause. His solicitors in a brief supported this by stressing that between 14th and 17th October, 2015, the whereabout of their clients was unknown until 18th of October, 2015, when the press released news of his arrest and detention by the SSS to the general public in Abuja. The news of the arrest of  activist Mr Nnamdi Kanu caused mass protests across parts of Delta State, Anambra State, Enugu State, Abia State Rivers State, Cross River State, Imo State.

Mr Nnamdi Kanu threatened “If they refuse to give us Biafra, the country of Somalia will look like a paradise compared to what will happen to that zoo. That's a promise, a pledge and it is also a threat to them” he portended. “If they do not give us Biafra, there will be nothing living in that very zoo they call Nigeria; nothing will survive there, I can assure you” 
 
Mr Nnamdi speaking further, alleged that governors in the Igbo communities are lackeys of ‘godfathers’ in Hausa/Fulani land elected into power to carry out their bidding. He particularly pointed out Imo State governor Rochas Okorocha who he profusely accused of turning Imo state to an Islam community. “Every Igbo governor you have has a Hausa-Fulani godfather”, the broadcaster said.

Mr. Kanu also kicked out the ideology of a peaceful approach to gaining independence (Biafran independence). Kanu advised his followers saying peace never works in the fight for liberation. “I don't believe in peaceful actualization or whatever rubbish they call it, i have never seen where one becomes free by peaceful means” he claimed. He suggested that according to statistics available to him, over 98% of Igbos support a Biafran secession as every Igbo has freedom in their DNA.

Namdi Kanu complained that the structures necessary to negotiate a peaceful Biafran independence does not exist thus leaving his followers no choice but to resort to their current approach to being free. He later showed support for the recent attack on the Enugu State Government House, claimed to have been carried out by the Biafra Zionist Movement. “Anybody that can do anything to disrupt the present orthodoxy of governance by a group of very corrupt cabals is welcome” he clearly expressed.
